Athens
Athens might be one of the world’s oldest cities, but its queer energy is very much alive and evolving. Same-sex relationships are legal, marriage equality was passed in 2024, and while some neighbourhoods still lean conservative, the capital has become a hub for Greece’s LGBTQ+ community, especially among younger generations.
You’ll find queer-run cafés, open drag shows, and couples strolling through Plaka or sipping espresso in Exarchia without issue. That said, cultural norms can still skew traditional, especially among older locals or in suburban areas. But in central Athens? You’ll feel seen, welcome, and very much at ease. Come for the ruins, stay for the rooftop bars and unexpectedly great queer scene.

Getting From A to Gay (Or B, or Z...)
Metro – Reliable, clean, and easy to navigate. Gender expression won’t raise eyebrows, though PDA is still relatively muted compared to Northern Europe.
Taxis & rideshares – Uber works via local taxis, and Free Now is widely used. Drivers are usually professional and used to tourists of all stripes.
Walking – Central Athens is safe and walkable, though sidewalks are uneven. You’ll see queer couples out, especially in Gazi and Exarchia.
Buses & trams – Affordable but sometimes crowded. Stick to the metro or walking for shorter distances unless you're feeling adventurous.
