Bangkok

Bangkok is bold. It’s chaotic, colourful and surprisingly affirming. For LGBTQ+ travellers, it’s long been a go-to, not just because of its vibrant nightlife, but because queer people are part of everyday life here. From drag brunches to gender-diverse beauty queens, visibility is common and celebration isn’t hard to find.

Legally, Thailand doesn’t yet offer marriage equality or formal gender recognition, but public attitudes are broadly tolerant. PDA isn’t hugely common across the board (queer or straight), but holding hands won’t raise eyebrows in most areas. That said, respect and cultural sensitivity go a long way, especially when visiting temples or rural areas.

The essentials

Let’s talk legal. Thailand is progressive in spirit, but still working on the paperwork.

Getting From A to Gay (Or B, or Z...)

BTS Skytrain & MRT – Clean, fast, and efficient. No issues for LGBTQ+ travellers. Just avoid PDA during rush hour - you’ll get side-eyes for logistics, not queerness.

Taxis & rideshares – Grab is reliable and taxis are plentiful. Language can be a barrier, so keep your destination written down. Drivers tend to be polite and discreet.

Walking – Bangkok isn’t the most pedestrian-friendly city, but central neighbourhoods like Silom and Ari are fine for strolls. Street crossings are... an adventure. Be bold and follow locals.
