Orlando
Orlando is a city full of contradictions. It’s world-famous for mouse ears and water rides, and it’s also home to one of the most vibrant LGBTQ+ communities in the southern US. It has one of the largest Pride parades in Florida, a legacy of queer resistance, and an unusually high number of queer-owned businesses for a city its size.
At the same time, it exists in a state where laws and leadership have become increasingly hostile to queer and trans people, especially in education and healthcare. The good news? Orlando’s local government, venues and communities have doubled down on inclusion, showing up for LGBTQ+ people with policy and action.
The essentials
Let’s talk legal. Orlando offers strong local protections for LGBTQ+ people, even though Florida has no statewide anti-discrimination law.

Getting From A to Gay (Or B, or Z...)
Driving – Most locals drive. Renting a car is common and essential if you’re doing theme parks or day trips.
Rideshares – Uber and Lyft are your go-tos, especially after a night out. Discretion isn’t typically needed, but you'll get a warmer welcome downtown than out in the suburbs.
Walking – Central neighbourhoods are safe for walking, and you’ll see queer couples out and about. That said, sidewalks can be hit or miss outside downtown.
Public transport – The LYNX bus system exists, but it's limited. If you're planning to explore beyond the tourist strip, you’ll need wheels.
